Posh enough for a Skateboard
First of all let me say that Bear is ALWAYS on a lead around livestock.

Yesterday we took him up onto the moor (Dartmoor)and I was shocked at his behaviour (I've recently been on slow walks with Royston so haven't seen Bear on the Moor for a while - Andy would take him).

He would pay no attention whatsoever to me or Andy - he was scenting for sheep, looking for sheep, and generally a pain in the arse - pulling on the lead and frantic if he saw one run.

I am well aware that even the strongest collar and lead is only as strong as its weakest part and has the potential to break - if that were to happen we would be in serious trouble.

So, can anybody recommend a trainer who can point us in the right direction with respect to Bear and his behaviour with sheep (He is fine with cows and horses, and reactive to some other dogs) PLEASE!

Thanks
Caroline

ps. Ordinary lead walking is fine - loose lead .........until he sees a cat,fox or airplane!

I have spoken to Jamie Penrith http://www.taketheleadtraining.co.uk regarding Trilby - who I was having serious recall problems with, especially when there were birds involved (and I'm certain given half the chance sheep). He is an advocate for the potential use of the e collar which might put people off - if it came down to it I would rather have a living dog that's had a short sharp shock than a dead dog shot by a farmer and dumped by the roadside (this happened to a friend of mine's pointer) - but that's a matter of personal opinion.
He does live near Tavistock so is probably quite close and was very happy to call me and have a long and informant conversation. Trilby came into her first season before I had a chance to make an appointment to see him and for him to assess the situation - fingers crossed she seems to be much better (thanks to copious amounts of M & S cocktail sausages).
If you go onto YouTube there are quite a lot of examples of him working with dogs including I think a GSD who was very sheep focused.
Good luck!

Please note:
CarilineM came on to ask for recommendations for a dog trainer. This was never meant to be a debate, so I have removed posts that are not offering the advice she came on the board to seek.
