Charlie ![]() Poor Charlie has had such a sad life in his 6 years, at less than a year old he was left in a rented flat when his owners moved out , we are not sure how long he was in there on his own. From there he was taken to the council pound where he would have been euthanized had it not been for German Shepherd Rescue South offering this boy a safe haven. Since being with us Charlie has gone out twice to a new home but both times were not successful, Charlie has been fine during the day, both families have said that you couldn't wish for a more loving attentive dog but when the evening comes it appears Charlie wants to be top dog and feels the need to guard one of the family and both times this has been the male in the house and he will not allow anyone else near them. Charlie has recently been in foster for several months with a single person, where he was an exemplary house guest; there were no issues of guarding or aggression at all. At present Charlie is in kennels which is dominated by females and he is an absolute sweetheart and a firm favourite with all the staff, he is behaving like the perfect gentleman we all know he is. Having not been successful living with a family, we have decided that in Charlie's best interest he needs to have a home with a single person, who has German shepherd experience and are willing to work with him. Charlie will need time to settle in and any new owner will need to have the patience to allow Charlie to do this. From one of our volunteer walkers 20/07/2014 He walked well out of the kennels and on meeting some other dogs on their way back into the kennels Charlie sat well whilst I had a quick chat. He didn't react to the other dogs and was only interested in getting on with his walk. Once on our way he was totally engrossed in all the wonderful smells and had a good mooch around. We stopped every now and again for a fuss(not sure which one of us enjoyed it more) and a groom. Charlie stood very well whilst I groomed him though we did this in short bursts as all the smells were far more fun. I walked Charlie on a long lead for the majority of the walk and he didn't try and pull at all. I put him back on a short lead with a headcollar on the way back and he walked lovely by my side. I stepped to the side out of the way of another dog. Charlie did pull a little to try and go over to the other dog but not over the top and soon settled down to again walk nicely back to the kennels. A lovely walk with a lovely dog.And lots of fuss too! 5th January 2015 Charlie has now been in a foster home for several months here is his progress : A gorgeous 4 year old boy who asks for very little. He has been in a single person foster home and is the perfect companion. He can be left, has no separation issues, does not take anything from worktops tables etc. has never had any accidents inside, travels well in the car. He knows basic commands very well and loves to learn and work. He does take time to trust you, but when that bond has been formed there any no issues. Charlie plays with all toys, and is not destructive, and especially likes the squeaky ones. Charlie does enjoy lots of fuss and tummy rubs, and will come and ask for them if he hasn't had enough. Charlie is reactive to other dogs when on the lead, so does need an experienced gsd owner. He does need very slow introductions. But he has also had a foster gsd dog stay over for the weekend and loved playing. Charlie needs an experienced gsd single owner who will take time to learn trust and will then have a lifelong loving companion.
