Hello, need some advice from others! after losing Big Duke last year from Torsion, we have now lost our beautiful Skyler from heart failure last Thursday. I hate JUlY!! :so sad: : We now only have Zak remaining a rescue from a litter of 11 from this site. He has never been an only one, also never interacted with other dogs outside of home, as was heavily guarded by Duke and Sky. He is a beautiful boy who is so very gentle with his rabbit Norman and his chinchilla Nibbler, he is frightened of dogs ! When we took on Duke he was younger and as Duke was a lot wider he was submissive to him and loved him. Now I am stuck I know its only been a few days for him but it is heart breaking, he mopes from room to room, doesn't want a walk and every time you walk through the door he thinks Sky is back. He is now 7 years old and very baby like. Question is how can I help him to recover, we are broken hearted at our loss but understand his loss must be even greater. :GSD:

:so sad: How very sad for Zak and your family ... I had the same situation last year , I lost a Gsd very sudden , leaving just one Gsd ,who always had a brother & sister to keep him company ...

He was a very sad ,not interested in walks , always wanted to get back to the car , when we went for a walk . He changed over night would never have believed he could go from a happy boy to not interested in anything .. he also does not have much contact with other dogs outside the home ...

I wasn't sure about getting another , but Lucas needed someone to play with , so I started looking for his sake :real GSD:
and within a few weeks I had found a bitch approx the same age and havent looked back , Jess will never replace Rocky the dog we both loved so much , but Lucas is back to his usual self ...
I would recommend to get another ,preferably a bitch , foster a dog in the first instance in view to keep ...
Im sure it will turn him around . Good Luck and keep us posted

I second Pam's advice.

We lost our last Shep suddenly and Wing had always been one of two, even in rescue he had his sister, so we got Kiera within a week. They hit it off straight away, a few bumps now and then but they're devoted as he and Jasmine were...it also helped us, all the negative feelings we had at the loss of Jasmine we turned into a positive in concentrating on Kiera.

I'm so sorry you're all going through this :group hug: :group hug:

Very sorry for your loss. I agree with other replies, sounds like time for a new pal....if he is frightened/wary of grown dogs how about a pup...he sounds a very gentle fella, with his little furry friends. Not only should it lift him from his depression, but it could be an opportunity to home an 'unwanted ' dog/pupster....win,win. I had this situation years ago,my little Moss lost her best pal and was truly grief stricken, I got a wee collie cross pup and they adored each other! Good luck.

If only I could go up the pole upside down

For what my opinions worth, the others are right. Get your unhappy dog a new companion, without a doubt :thumbs up:

We had the same thing when we lost Simba. My Sheba was lost even though we had Barney the Labrador she would search the house looking for Simba. She didn't settle again properly until we adopted Jake.
Somewhere on this board there must be the perfect friend for your sad baby & if we can help you find him or her then please ask. :group hug:

:GSD: hello and thank you for responding, I knew you would have the answer ! we will start our search slowly and find him a friend. He is no better in himself, his walk in the rain was an effort tonight and he suddenly loves going back to the car. so I will keep my eyes peeled and what will be will be. lol charlieone :gsdhead:

Would like to stay in bed like the other Pat does

Everyone here is correct.
I did not add anything as I did not get another after I lost Missy.
My Labrador bless her has not laid on a dog bed since we lost Missy.
Sitting here thinking about Missy.
Missy had a stroke three years ago right now.
God I so miss her, until then I had owned GSD since 1970.
A members here brought her :gsd paw: :gsd paw: here to visit.
What a difference it made to Rosie.
I feel cruel not getting another now.
Cannot believe I did not get another
Happy hunting hope you find a GSD soon. :fingers crossed:
