Scared of being chased; 14 month old dog does a runner!

My 14 month old male doesn't understand chase & does a runner!

He is a very happy chap. Lives with 2 others. Loves to play.

We go to training classes twice a week & go on the BIGGSD walks weekly, we have been going since about August. When we first started he was fine off lead never strayed very far & enjoyed a game. On 1 of our recent walks he was chased by 2 dogs, became spooked & ran off. He was missing for about 20 mins. Since then he has not been able to be let off as every time he's chased he runs scared & seems to have lost all his confidence.

My question is does anyone have any advice on how to re build his confidence so he can be let off a long line again?

Hi ,

Dont think you can put a time on it , every dog is so different , when you say long line do you mean 10 metres ?

You know your dog best , let him off for small periods of time.

Maybe fine an enclosed field ... so he cant escape with friends dogs .

Hi Pamela,

Line is approx 10 meters. He just doesn't understand that if he stops running others will stop chasing! Lol
Will work on any advice given. :-)

Take him out with a dog that has excellent recall if you can find one!

Keep him on the long line for a while but get the other owner to keep recalling their dog and call yours back too, give a tug on the line and be ready with a treat as soon as he comes back. lots of praise too.

When you feel that your dog is more confident then allow off the lead in an enclosed area (tennis court ideal) and keep repeating the process with the good dog. Then you can try with other dogs, only one at a time in enclosed areas until you both are confident.
It will take a long time but worth it in the end.
Hope this helps
