I bought a wonderful sign from ebay for the side gate. Good quality, waterproof, good choice of text & pictures. I think this one hits the point home, without being boring & official.

cook3639 was the seller & she appears to make all sorts of signs. No relation, honest! Just thought it was a product worth recommending.

Posh enough for a Skateboard
Mine says "caution, dogs running free".

Doesn't say to beware or anything else, just that they're running free and don't leave the gate open. (Or, reading between the lines - enter at your own risk!!)

We bought two off ebay recently, one was slate and the other (for the back gate) was resin. Both are really nice.

I agree they are really nice but I'd be very wary indeed about putting up any sign which said 'Beware'. Or 'protected', 'security', 'guarded' etc etc etc What is someone to beware of .. does that mean you are aware of a problem and need to warn people about it? .. etc etc

In this now extremely litigious, stupidly-PC world of ours, where common sense has been forgotten, why put yourself in the position of having to defend yourself and your dogs because some parasite err I mean laywer will try to take you task for the wording on a sign?

Sighs at the state of the world today..

I've had similar signs up for over 30 years and never been involved in litigation. I think if anything it will make you less liable. I'd need to controvine the law and show negligence which I wouldn't.... And the wife likes them ;)

The ones I don't like and would never have are the ones with the snarling, teeth bared designed to frighten ones, projects the wrong image.

From the RSPCA website:

http://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/faq/-/question/ENQCADGuardDogs/category/Pets/

A ‘guard dog’ means a dog that is being used to protect:

* premises
* property kept on the premises
* a person who is guarding premises or such property.

The Guard Dogs Act 1975 was introduced to control the use of guard dogs.

The law states that:

* if a guard dog is in use at any premises, then a warning sign to that effect must be clearly posted at each entrance to the premises
* if the dog is off the leash, that a handler must be present and in control of the dog
* if the handler is not present, then the dog must be secured and not allowed to go freely about the premises.

Another viewpoint is here
http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?pid=1317569#pid1317569

including the advice of someone who's been to a Trevor Cooper seminar. It's worth reading the whole page but the last few posts are particularly interesting.

I think I'll stick with the 'Dogs running free' sign on my gate for the time being.

The leap from the two signs I have in my links to a guard dog is pretty Large. I'm happy with mine.
